This should prove to be an interesting debate..
I don't know who created Family guy (I haven't looked), but it seems like the show got it's ideas from Simpsons.

Are you kidding?
The Simpsons is better, but the past seasons have been pretty weak.
Seth McFarlane created Family Guy.

This is really an unjust debate topic.
You are comparing shows from different time periods (Im talking about old, BETTER Simpsons Vs Current Family Guy). Ill be honest, Ive never laughed so much at a show such as Family Guy, but the stuff they show now is much more publicly accepted than would be in the middle 90s. If the Simpsons (granted they came up with it) put that kind of comedy on in that day and age, pretty sure it would never have lasted on mainstream channels for long.
Though I enjoy Family Guy more now, its safe to say Simpsons are the best, especially as a "pioneering" cartoon series.

Well it seems that this site is no different from 100% of the people around me, everyone is in love with family guy. Well I don't see it! Instead of just laughing hillariously at the next episode actually watch it lol.
My biggest pet peeve for that show is that the writers pick one joke and play it for wayyyyyy too long. Examples: Peter scrapes his knee, and he moans for the next 1-2 minutes (are you laughing right now? well don't be, that was totally overkill). How about when he fights with that stupid chicken thing? That scene literally lasted for 3-4 minutes; maybe they should be getting more creative writers, but wait, that's what the general population loves?
Ugh. lol, that show really annoys me. And it doesn't say much for the general population!!!!

OK, the fact that Peter moaned for 2-3 minutes was hilarious. You must not drink enough to appreciate the show. And I know you're counter-argument will be something along the lines of 'Why should you need to be fdrunk to enjoy a show?' To which I'll reply, "Shut up and have another beer." HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA(peter griffin's laugh_) and yes im wasterdd beyong all hell. Happy unofficial gusy, even though you might not know hwat thatm eans

Ok, I hate American Dad, for one thing. Futurama, not bad, ok that show is great. Family Guy is awsome. Oh, and that part where Peter moaned for 2-3 minutes it was only funny the second time he did it. But, that episode rocked. I mean they made fun of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate factory but, Futurama's one was better. But, Simpsons, I fall asleep when I watch it. I just can't watch it but if we start talking about the old Fox shows, then King of the Hill is it. I liked it when Simpsons made fun of King of the Hill though.
I love all of those shows, but................
ROBOT CHICKEN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They make fun of everything in that show.

the brilliant part is that you don't laugh initially at peter's moans... but as they completely overdo it the situation becomes so rediculous and silly that it is truly funny.

The original 3 seasons of Family Guy were some of the most absolutely laugh-out-loud shows I have ever seen, partly because they had so many obscure cultural references to things from the 80s and 90s, many of which you don't actually understand until after multiple viewings and possibly Google. The newer episodes have had their highlights, of course, especially the one parodying the FCC. Taking a joke "too far" is a matter of personal taste, and the only moment where I have honestly said to myself "oookay, that's enough of that" was the scene where Peter/Brian/Stewie see who can last the longest without puking after taking a bottle of this stomach medicine ("8 Simple Rules for Buying my Teenage Daughter").
Another thing that sets Family Guy apart is the quality of the musical numbers. "What? WTF does that have to do with anything?" A valid question. I find a high-brow irony in the fact that an animated show with no shortage of fart-jokes has a professional musical background.
I get bored of the Simpsons quickly. Family Guy, I can watch and re-watch. This may be due to the fact that I have never avidly watched the Simpsons in the first place, but from what I've seen it's decent, but preachy.
American Dad is "meh". Futurama owns.
And that was way too long of a post.

Man, are you serious? That was amazingly funny! Especially when Brian asked Peter to hold his ears and he vomits all over him. Classic.

Personally, I'm gonna have to say family guy. The simpsons, to me, has become too predictable. The jokes are just way too obvious. It's the kind of joke where Homer says, "This will never happen," and then it happens. Family Guy, on the other hand, seems more original. Instead of simpsons-like comedy, Family Guy, even though the premise of, "Back when I..." then showing the clip gets a little repetitive, manages to keep new material. The clip that comes to mind is in the episode with Lois becoming a model, when the cookie monster is hiding in the stall and eating a bunch of cookie dough like it was cocaine. Priceless! As for American Dad, it's an interesting thought, but I feel like I'm watching the Village people of the 21st century on screen. Futurama can't go wrong, I love the diversity in the jokes.
My rating would have to be:
Futurama>Familiy Guy>Simpsons>American Dad
