Go ahead, search for their names, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, on any mainstream news site. You won't find them. (Well you might, if you get lucky, but the coverage has been severely limited.) Want to know why? Because the media doesn't want you to know about the ultimate travesty of justice that occurred today as they were taken away by US Marshalls to serve 11 and 12 year sentences, respectively, for shooting a fleeing illegal alien drug-runner (who, by the way, had 800 pounds of marijuana in his van) during a pursuit. Do you understand what I'm telling you? They were arrested and prosecuted, for doing their goddamn JOB.
Oh, and guess what happened to the drug runner? He was brought back out of Mexico, given full immunity, and free health care. Not enough? He's going to SUE our government for $5 million. Did you get that? FIVE MILLION DOLLARS. (Here we thought Tennie Pierce was greedy.)
And the media doesn't want you to hear about it, because they know how disgusting it is. They know how badly this reflects on the character of this pathetic excuse for an administration. But that's why we have talk radio, and the Web. That's why Google gives you 188,000 results.
Now, let's try to be as objective as possible: They didn't file the proper report that they had fired their weapons, and one of them picked up their shell casings, which violates protocol because you're supposed to preserve the "scene of the incident". So what is that grounds for? Loss of job, maybe a small fine. But to put them in separate federal prisons, 2000 miles away from their families, for over 10 years? To prisons where ex-law-enforcement are one of the lowest groups in the pecking order? How can that judge sleep at night? Oh, and what's even better is that they were denied a motion to stay out of prison during the appeals process. Isn't that grace given to convicted rapists and murderers sometimes? But apparently Ramos and Compean deserve no such sympathy.
And this prosecuting attorney... My GOD. I thought defense attorneys were scumbags, but this... this is just beyond the pale. Listen to some of these gems from the prosecution's arguments:
Let's examine some more of the juicy details of this farce of American justice, shall we? The illegal went home and cried to his mommy about getting hurt. His mommy called the mommy of Border Patrol agent Rene Sanchez. Rene Sanchez, being the morally upright citizen that he is, betrays his fellow agent and tips off someone in Homeland Security. Homeland Security goes down to Mexico, finds the drug runner, brings him back for full immunity and free health care so that he can testify against Ramos and Compean. Oh, and guess what the druggie did to express his gratitude? Smuggled another 1000 pounds of marijuana across the border. But the jury never knew about that, because he was supposed to have immunity, remember?
But poor Mr. Davila (the drug runner filth) was trying to surrender after he ran into a ditch and couldn't move fast enough to avoid staring down the barrel of Compean's firearm! Being a law enforcement officer, Compean pistol-whipped him to make sure that he wouldn't try anything foolish; which of course he did, because he started running again, flashing what appeared to be a gun at his side. Compean tried to catch him but fell. It was sometime between this point and the time that he jumped into another van on the Mexico side, that he was shot in the ass by Ramos. He was such a fine, upstanding citizen, afterall; merely trying to make a living for his dying mother and dirt-poor yet numerous extended family.
Clearly, the government was more than happy to side with this drug peddling piece of trash than with its own officers--the people who protect the borders daily with their skill, strength, and lives.
Alright, so the agents made some mistakes. They picked up some shell casings instead of leaving them for the inspection team, and they didn't file a report because they thought their fellow officers were already doing so. Administrative mistakes demand an administrative punishment: suspension, a few supervisor-led talks, maybe a fine. But to take away their lives, and the lives and livelihood of their families, for 10+ years? That's lower than low. That's Dante's-7th-circle-of-hell low.
And if you think this is just angry-white-man speech, check yourself. This is about American justice and the American government's blatant disregard for the courage of its own security enforcement officers. Republicans and Democrats alike, from Tom Tancredo to Diane Feinstein, have gathered behind this effort to show Bush and his cronies what kind of sick twisted system we've come to live under.
This is about more than just the fact that some idiot judge, some scumbag attorney, and one hell of a skewed jury, took the word of an unabashed illegal drug smuggler over the words of two exemplary Border Patrol agents.
This is about more than the fact that the mainstream media prefers to turn a blind eye to this unconscionable mockery of justice.
This is about the fact that the US government, the current administration, is saying loud and clear, "We are now, officially, Mexico's b*tch."[/b]
I thought about it today, and realized that, as much as I hate jumping on the bandwagon, I have come to truly dislike the president. I mean, I knew that I disagreed with a lot of his decisions and actions before, but now... I just can't stand the thought of living 2 more years under the current administration. That, and the fact that Ah-nold (Schwarzenegger) is really a socialist bedfellow of Vicente Fox... It's painful.
If you live in the USA and this strikes you as something worth taking action over, there is a petition online here. But more effective is actually writing your own letters and making your own phone calls to the congressmen and other elects in your state. There's also a charity for their families, as the legal fees have been through the roof--literally, causing one family's house to be foreclosed. Joe Loya, father in law of Ramos, serves as the main link to the families on the Web with his blogspot site, agentramos.blogspot.com/ . Also, here is a page with some of the important phone numbers (I know, it's John and Ken, but that was the only page I had open with all the phone #'s in the same spot).
And as one last note, an interesting little debate on who the Constitution really applies to. Maybe we'll have our own after some of you read my post.
PS: Mods, feel free to move this to a debate board or whatever; I just thought it belonged here since people tend to gather to this section more often.

"The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled it is a violation of someone's Fourth Amendment rights to shoot them in the back while fleeing if you don't know who they are and/or if you don't know they have a weapon."
- scumbag attorney #1, I mean Debra Kanof
First of all, they both thought they saw a gun. Secondly, the drug runner physically attacked both officers. But wait, even if he never had a weapon and was just fleeing so he could save his ass for the next drug run, HE'S STILL NOT A ****ING CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES. What the hell is so hard to understand about this? Constitutional rights apply to US Citizens. Period."discharge of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence"
- scumbag attorney #2, I mean John Sutton
Crime of violence? What in the hell are you talking about? They were trying to apprehend a known illegal drug-runner. Last time I checked, that's what the Border Patrol DOES.Let's examine some more of the juicy details of this farce of American justice, shall we?
