From what I gather, there is a little [Exalt] [Smite] link beside the name of all the posters(aside from your own name) and you can click on one or the other to increase or decrease the "karma"

I believe in essence it's just a way of showing who's got the favour of other people on the board and who doesn't.

The mods probably know more about this.

That pretty much sums it up. If you read a post that you thought was very well written, then you would Exalt the person. If you were offended or thought the post was a waste, then you Exalt that person. It has no real effect.
