Do they mean anything? Should anyone give a silky shit about them? Are they important at all, especially to people who play them and won't be going into a professional athletic career? Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those nerds who never do anything physical and hate sports. I love playing sports, I just hate how dedicated and involved the jocks get with high school sports, considering about one out of every hundred of them actually get signed to a real team, when they should be focusing on their academics so they can actually do something with their lives and not end up bagging my groceries. Quote: www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=dumbassjocksExtreme optimism? Too stupid to do anything else? Discuss. (BTW My apologies if this belongs in Polls or Debate)

I know a highschool sophomore who is just about as good at basketball as I've seen some college juniors play. I'm a freshman in college, and he's beaten me. Pretty darn fast too.
I think some people take it too far.

I think you're the same person that always says 'You're not going to marry her, so why bother dating?'.
Highschool sports aren't about getting good enough to be a professional all the time. It's called trying something new, instead of sitting by and being bitter just because you don't have the courage to do so yourself.
Sports also are good for discipline and being able to juggle several things at once. Most people don't understand that focusing on practiceing/working out for football or any other sport is really hard. You have to go to practice for around 4-5 hours every day and then come home to do all of your homework.
Oh, and they're fun. I really don't see why you can't respect what other people want to do?

Sports are great in school. For some they may be the only opportunity a kid has to play that sport in their entire lives.
It helps develop bonds between teammates that can lead to lifelong friendships.
It can inspire confidence in one's personal abilities.
It can teach a kid how see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves, a group dedicated to the same goal.
It gives communities a chance to connect when they all gather to root on their team.
Sure some individuals take it too seriously. Or their parents do. The prospects of being able to turn pro are extremely small.
But sports can still provide opportunities. Some kids that may not go pro will at least get partial or full sports scholarships and be able to get an education they would otherwise not be able to afford.
Plus it's fun to play sports.

Sure some individuals take it too seriously. Or their parents do. The prospects of being able to turn pro are extremely small. But Techno at least managed to brush upon it, somewhat

It's just some competitive fun...and a way to keep people physically active whenever possible.

How did I miss your point? I gave my 2 cents and managed not to call you a nerd in my opinion of high school sports.
