Hey everybody. This might better go under "Support" but I figure more people frequent this forum, so here goes. As many of you know, I offered to revise and correct the questions in the triviahost files over the next few weeks. I've been removing spelling errors in answers, the Brit spellings (though we've all grown to love that, I know), and the answers which contain entirely different questions in them. I've also been correcting grammar every now and then along the way, and deleting questions that are too long, or rephrasing them to make them short enough to be completely visible in the channel. What I'm asking now is for anyone and everyone who's a regular to tell what changes you'd most like to see...which sets of questions you'd like to see eliminated, or reworked, and any other ideas you might have to make this better when I'm done. At my present rate, I'll be finishing it in mid to late May, at which point I'm also going to add in more questions. Let me know what ideas you guys have!
PS-I've already removed all the heraldry questions (not deleted, I have them in a separate file), let me know what other sections you guys think could do with a possible deletion or shrinking...

Get rid of those "triviagod" questions if they're still around.

Triviagod questions? Please elaborate...

I think I fixed all those ones. There were some questions about other trivia channels (the ones I got some of the question files from) and i removed them all I think. I also added some of our own.

I think I fixed all those ones. Cool, thanks. Triviagod questions? Please elaborate... They were questions like this: Triviagod: Who built the ninth level of the Tirterramtia Gates?*Makropheena. They just always seemed like nonsense and most people, if not everyone, had no idea what they were referencing.

Well I would say to take out the mythology questions, but then I've had a vote on that before and its failed ( triviahost.proboards26.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Poll&thread=1115615810&page=1 ). But since your editing questions anyways, maybe we can reach a compromise (between myself and the supporters of them), how about we take out some of the really obscure ones. So the greek/roman/biblical ones can stay, but the others.. Oh, and my vote is for keeping the British (also Canadian) spellings! But then again, I guess consistency is probably best.

I was planning along those lines Navy...when I reach 'em I'm going to get rid of any that I think no sane person should or would know. So basically as you say, the Greek, Roman, biblical, and possibly Norse ones, will stay. Everything else will probably go...I swear to god I once saw one that asked for the Polynesian god of obsidian...
And my rationale for ditching the brit spelling, quite frankly, is as a favor to newer people. I've seen on several occasions, people come in who are new, and try to get to an obvious one like "Pearl Harbor" only to be annoyed by "harbour." It may seem trivial (no pun intended), but I think it does annoy newer users who aren't used to that.
And yes, standardization helps too...Brit and non-brit are both used, so I figured I'd better go with one.

I'd say perhaps take out some of the year questions...when someone isn't there who knows the dates off the top of his/her head, it just causes mass spam. Also, the word for water questions that only have 2-3 letters also make a lot of spam.
edit: Also the heraldry questions...no one really seems to know or care about heraldry...no offense meant to anyone who actually does.

Ok, here's the latest update...I'm currently mired in the myth questions...trying to keep the ones that I think there's even a snowball's chance in hell of someone knowing. That's a small chunk of the Greek and Roman myth, and a smaller chunk of the Norse myth and some biblical stuff. Everything else, chucked (though saved in another file). Haven't gotten to angels and demons yet, but when I do I'll probably ditch all of those. I've got to veto years for the moment since I have no way of coming up with a fair process for eliminating the "less common" year answers. But I'll see what I can do.

Although I'm sure it could be a lot of work, standardizing answers to either have "The" in all questions or removing "The" from the questions that have it already.
Same for numbers, some answers are "20" and some "Twenty"
Adding more movie/tv questions would be good. Now lots of people just type in Susan Sarandon or Richard Gere without even looking at the question. Jodie Foster as well.
I'd be happy to write up more movie questions, but I am a new member so maybe the senior members would like to do that.

Both good ideas Techno. I've been working on both since the beginning, where possible. Removing extraneous "The"'s...i.e., "Nile" and not "the Nile." Also standardizing common answer forms, i.e, "Mount Everest" for every possible question of that...no more "Everest, Mount everest, mt. everest" confusion. And as far as numbers, unless it's a mathematics question (couldn't get rid of those), the number will be the written word form of it...so twenty, from the minute Chalupa updates the bot with my questions. And I'll be adding in the questions that Comp and others have contributed over the course of my doing this, so feel free to suggest your own!

My mind is pretty blank right now, but I guess I could add a few more topics that deserve some looking over.
- Questions that give you a name of an animal and expect the scientific name of it. Not only are those questions incredibly vague, they're pretty much impossible for, er, non-biologists. - Questions that ask for the highest point of random countries. Barring Google, the majority of them are streak-breakers. - Questions that ask for leaders of random countries. Same thing applies as above. - I hate to say it, but the questions that ask, "What is the <insert country here> name for water?" Though I guess it's possible to memorize them, they usually just cause a slew of random letter guessing, which is...er, counterproductive or something. Yeah, I'm trying to sound smart.
There are probably many more that'll hit me, but they escape me at the moment.

Well, it's an easy fix on the scripting side of the bot to take care of question inconsistencies like "a", "an", and "the", or the lack thereof.
I have it fixed on my bot so it overlooks those and several other symbols, such as the infamous apostrophe.

In response to your ideas Booty, check and mate. I've already dealt with most of the super-obscure leader questions...I left in a few of the more common ones like Hosni Mubarak for Egypt (things I think some people, read...me, might get). Already ditched the different languages for water questions, they're flat gone, all of 'em. I haven't reached the highest points or the scientific animal names yet, but I imagine I'll ditch the highest points (but leave the lowest, bodies of water are usually do-able and do serve to see who knows where things are), and I'll probably leave the scientific names if it's asking for you to give the common name, which, once there's a clue, is do-able. I'll be getting rid of the ones that ask for the scientific name from the common, though.
