Suppose your ideal candidate for president on both sides wins the primary and gets on the ticket. Would you vote democratic or republican? I'll wait to respond until after some of you have put your bids in, though my answer is somewhat obvoius (my reasoning may surprise you, though).
Oh, and I guess you could always vote *snicker* third party *snicker*

I don't consider myself a Democrat, really, but I'm probably going to vote Democrat.

Ok, NO jokes anymore dx.
I'm going to be very frank with you guys. I've never been fully interested in politics, unlike a lot of you guys, and therefore, don't have much background on the candidates.

It wasn't a joke. I was completely serious.
On a more on topic note, though, why would you vote that way?
For example, Lost, are you voting Democrat to spite the republican party or because you honestly think they'll be better?
PtC, are you voting republican because they correlate with your religious beliefs or because of their leadership capabilities?

Mostly to spite the Republican party, yes.
Actually, though, there is a chance I might vote third party, ie. Independent or such.

Well, my family is mainly republican. My older sister has disliked bush because of his recent antics, but she may have settled down.
Um, yeah, religious beliefs mainly. Against abortion one of those. Not much else to say though. I always voted republican, no matter what.

My faceoff would be Giuliani vs Obama.
And if I could actually vote in the US election I'd probably go with Obama but would be fine if Giuliani did in fact win. Though there would be a tad of fear that regardless of Giuliani's personal beliefs he would just hold to the party lines and nothing would be different between him and Dubya.
I'd also like to see if the dems can actually do the job. The dems don't seem to have much spine for anything. Even if they are correct about a topic and have supporting facts they still seem wishy washy.
Whereas the republicans can be wrong about something but they are forcefully wrong and strong about it.
Canada was is almost like a mirror image politically of what is happening(or could happen) in the next US election(but with the parties reversed).
We let the Conservatives win but not by much just to see how they would do even though we were afraid they could screw things up.
That and the liberal party was rife with scandals and corruption.

PRONE, RBOB THOUGHT YOU AGREED REPUBLICANS ARE IDIOTS AFTER DEBATE AND DISAVOWED ANY ALLEGIANCE TO THEM? ANYONE WHO VOTES FOR A PARTY BECAUSE OF WHAT THEIR FAMILY VOTES FOR LACKS INDEPENDENT THOUGHT AND IS FOOLISH.
EVERYONE INVOLVED IN AMERICAN POLITICS ARE IDIOTS. THERE ARE NO GOOD CANDIDATES. IN AMERICAN POLITICS IT IS EXPONENTIALLY MORE IMPORTANT TO HAVE GOOD MAKEUP ARTISTS AND REALISTIC HAIR EXTENSIONS THAN ANY ACTUAL CONVICTION OR EFFECTIVE CAMPAIGN PLATFORM.
WHOEVER YOU VOTE FOR YOU WILL STILL GET THE SAME ULTRACAPITALIST CONSUMERIST, ONLY-CARE-ABOUT-THE-IMMEDIATE-SHORT-TERM-AND-PERSONAL-PROFIT PARTY.
RBOB IS SURE NONE OF YOU WILL DISAGREE GLOBAL WARMING IS THE GREATEST THREAT TO AMERICA TODAY, LET ALONE HUMAN CIVILIZATION AND LIFE ON EARTH BUT DOES EITHER PARTY CONSIDER TAKING REASONABLE ACTION ON IT?
WHAT ABOUT SCIENTISTS WHO EXCLAIM THAT WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF THE 6TH GREAT EXCTINCTION IN THE HISTORY OF THE EARTH SOLELY BECAUSE OF INDUSTRIAL CIVILIZATION, PARTICULARLY AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL CIVILIZATION?
WHAT ABOUT HOW THE UNION OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS GARNERED A PETITION WITH 10,000 PHDS ON IT THAT CONDEMNS BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES FOR LYING ABOUT SCIENCE, BENDING IT FOR THEIR OWN GAIN?
WHAT ABOUT YOUR FAILING OIL ENERGY ECONOMY WHILE GLOBAL RESERVES ARE DECLINING DISASTROUSLY PAST A PEAK?
WHAT ABOUT THE AMERICAN DEFICIT BEING THE LARGEST IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD?
WHAT ABOUT HAVING THE LARGEST BUDGET IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ON TOP OF THIS DEFICIT WHILE SPENDING MORE MONEY ON THE MILITARY THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED?
WHAT ABOUT SPENDING MORE MONEY ON DEVELOPMENT OF A SUBMARINE RESCUE VEHICLE THAN ALL THE MONEY SPENT ON LIBRARIES AND CHILD WELFARE PROGRAMS NATIONALLY?
WHAT ABOUT A WAR THAT IS A QUAGMIRE THAT, AS IT STANDS TODAY, HAS ABSOLUTELY NO VALID JUSTIFICATION AND MAKES A HELL OF A LOT LESS SENSE THAN VIETNAM EVER DID?
WHAT ABOUT THE SELLING OFF OF YOUR MANUFACTURING BASE TO CHINA AND INDIA?
NONE OF YOU WILL DISAGREE THAT THESE ARE MAJOR ISSUES BUT DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU NEVER HEAR ABOUT THEM? BECAUSE THE DEMOCRATS DONT CARE. THE REPUBLICANS DONT CARE. THEY CARE ABOUT MAKING THEMSELVES RICH. YOU NEVER HEAR ABOUT THESE ISSUES BECAUSE AMERICA HAS BEEN CONSUMED BY IRRATIONAL MADNESS. WHILE YOUR COUNTRY RUNS THE WORLD AND MOST EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD BEGS AMERICA TO TAKE ACTION ON GLOBAL WARMING, YOU AMERICANS WORRY ONLY ABOUT TRIVALTIES LIKE TERRORISM AND GAY MARRIAGE. ISRAEL HAS SURVIVED 50 YEARS WITH THE CONSTANT THREAT OF TERRORISM OVER ITS HEAD AND ISRAELIS ARE MANY, MANY TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE IN A TERRORIST ATTACK BUT ARE HTEY SO COMPLETELY OBSESSED BY IT AS YOU ARE OF THE MINISCULE, MINISCULE CHANCE THAT TERRORISTS MIGHT KILL ANOTHER AMERICAN?
IT DOESNT MATTER WHO YOU VOTE FOR, ODDS ARE YOU WILL BE VOTING FOR A SELFISH IDIOT.
HAVE YOU SEEN THE SIMPSONS WHERE KANG AND KODOS TAKE OVER THE DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN PARTIES AND NO MATTER WHO WINS THE SIMPSONS HAVE TO BUILD A LASER TO SHOOT AT SOME PLANET NOBODY HAS EVER HEARD OF? WELL, YOU GET THE POINT.
IT IS TOO LATE. YOU AMERICANS CAN KEEP BICKERING OVER ABORTION AND DRILLING IN THE ARCTIC WILDLIFE PRESERVE, TO THE REST OF THE WORLD IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE NERO, FIDDLING WHILE ROME BURNS.
IT IS TOO LATE. WE HAVE A CENTURY UNTIL THE EARTH BECOMES DAMN NEAR UNINHABITABLE AND AT THAT TIME YOU AMERICANS WILL SURELY FIND CHINA, TERRORISTS OR SOMEONE ELSE TO BLAME FOR YOUR OWN IDIOCY.
AND YOU WONDER WHY THE "THE TERRORISTS", WHICH IF ANY HUMAN BEING WAS RATIONAL ENOUGH, WOULD HAVE BECOMEO NE A LONG TIME AGO, HATE AMERICA SO MUCH.

My two cents:
In this day and age, the nation is divided. There are super liberals who will always vote democrat no matter what, moderates who will vote republican because they truly believe that, given the circumstances, the republicans can clinch the Iraq conflict and then leave in 2012, moderates who will vote democrat to spite the "warmongering republicans" and super conservatives who will vote republican.
I tend to consider myself a rational thinker; I don't spite entire parties due to what their last candidate did nor do I vote along party lines. Really, the only reason I consider myself Republican is because I share more beliefs with them than with Democrats. Here's how I see it:
There are two choices for Democrats - Hillary and Obama.
Hillary is very out of touch with the American people, and with me. Her prior actions (censoring Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, etc) seem as though she's trying to shelter America. She seems to wish isolationism upon us, and I don't agree with that. Not only that, but the world is not ready for a Female leader of a superpower. That may sound awful, but take a look at the customs around the world. In the middle east, the very area where we're trying to get under control, women are considered wildly inferior. While I'm not condoning that way of thinking, having Hillary as president in '08 would be an insult to their ancient traditions. This would not be good and would tremendously hinder progress in the unsculped nation.
If anything, it should be Hillary in 2012. Not in 2008.
Barack Obama is a complete no for me for the simple reason that as soon as he takes office, he's going to at least cut in half the number of troops in Iraq. This is a move I'm passionately against, for reasons already expressed on this forum.
McCain is a war hero; Giuliani handled the 9/11 attacks admirably. I think they'd handle the war well as well as domestic issues. They wouldn't raise taxes unless they absolutely HAD to, and with the new bill in Congress that will state that we can't spend more than we take in, the deficit shouldn't suffer under either of their rule.
I would vote for either McCain or Giuliani. Republican.
