Sort of random, but:
I'm looking at laptops for my fiance and trying to decide what brands are the best for reliability and entertainment-quality (e.g. good built-in sound and speakers, 17" widescreen, etc). It's going to be a desktop replacement so it doesn't have to be those super-portable feather-weight ones. I'm looking at a budget of $1000 to $1200.
So, any suggestions, good/bad experiences with a certain company, etc.?

I never had to make this choice myself. Dell is pretty good. They've got ok customer support. HP maybe. Well, I haven't really looked into it that much. My family has an HP desktop. My dad uses an HP for work, and it's been fairly reliable. Hasn't crashed on him in awhile. I think you would go with HP. You can check here: www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/services/inspnnb/1721_DNCWNA1?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhsYou can always get a customized laptop from newegg.com

That is a dirty dirty lie. Dell has the worst customer support that I have ever heard of.

Yeah, I have memories of having to wait literally hours on the phone to talk to a Dell service representative.

A couple people I know just got Macbooks, Intel dual core processors and you can run Windows on them. You could look into that. My brother purchased a Sager computer, I think they make either alienware or acer, and other high end stuff. Or maybe it's both. You could look at that option too. The site he was on was www.powernotebooks.com I believe.

Sent a dell desktop back a while ago. Service was horrendous, as were the actual computer components. Researched and found out that Dell could have used a better component (in this case a fan) for just $50 more but used a cheap piece of dung instead. Called them up to have it repaired/replaced and after hours on the phone and weeks waiting for a computer tech I just sent it back instead.
Got a gateway from a Costco, 5 years later i'm still using it and it's been great without any problems. (It was cheaper than the dell from hell as well)

Dells do indeed, how may I put it, suck moose balls? Anything that breaks or malfunctions (which they will) are seemingly impossible to replace, because Dells are incompatible with every other kind of software. Each and every part has to be DELL and DELL alone. I actually had the same problem with a Dell fan myself a few years back. *Curses malevolently at the brand*

That's really funny though. Although I've never had to go through the "hassle" of dell support, I do find it funny of their H2C coolant system on their desktops, which would take top of the line in speed and performance.
I guess they put more of their time into developing their desktops, and less and less time on the phone. Maybe that's the reason why their customer support is all in a shamble.

Man this laptop isn't detecting the AC power properly now. Did it once before, anyone know how to fix this? Other than dealing with Dell's stupid customer service?
So did you finally decide on anything raen7?

That's clearly not the website that you proclaim it to be. Maybe a typo on your part?
Anyway, probably going to go with Gateway. Slightly more expensive but worth it for the durability and service.
Estimated Price: $1,240
Gateway® NX860X Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz, 2MB L2C, 667MHz FSB Intel 945PM Chipset Vista Home Premium (probly gonna switch it out for XP) 1GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM 120GB 5400rpm SATA HDD 17" WXGA TFT Active Matrix 1440x900 max. res. Integrated 802.11a/b/g/n wireless CD-RW / DVD-ROM combo drive NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 128MB Bluetooth built-in Ports: (4) USB 2.0, VGA, IEEE 1394 (FireWire), S-Video (TV-Out) 6-in-1 media card reader 10/100/1000 Ethernet
...and a partridge in a pear tree. Drooling yet?
