I think this has become a rather large issue, especially recently, as the number of trivia players increases. I frequently find myself in the channel with a large number of people, many of whom are spamming regularly, and won't shut up. When this happens, it would be ideal to kick the spammers, and if they persist, ban them. Most of the time, however, there are no people in the channel with the power to kick/ban. Trash_bag is frequently in the channel, but is often away, which is no use. I believe that we need more people with the power to kick/ban to help eliminate the problem of people who spam, argue, and insult constantly. Apologies for the long post, but I really think something needs to be done about this. I'm not sure who would be suitable, and I'm not just trying to get myself more access. We just need someone who can be responsible and help make trivia a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

I think that compared to other channels, including our newest channel, op triviahost on east, we fair pretty well in the language department. From what I've seen, there does seem to be some players who attract problems. I have made a stand as I often do and have banned these players.
We currently have Chalupa, four moderators and I believe three members with such access. So there are eight people covering this channel - is that correct Chalupa?
From time to time we get trouble makers or even innocent people with players who are jealous of the time their friend spends on trivia. These people sometimes enter our channel following their 'friend' using the friends list and do all sorts of things to disenfranchise the person into leaving and playing other games instead.
The bot has been a bit stronger lately and Chalupa restarts it regularly which seems to remove any accumulated lag.

Currently, users with MOD powers are: Trash_Bag, Navy_Ceals (Who is taking some time away), Lost_Peon, Rabid_Gecko, Pandora99, Myself, and TriviaHost who does some self moderating and at times will ban users based on defined criterea.
Members who join this web site are given the power to .voteban which is a fair way to ban people who are causing problems. If the people in the channel are bothered by someone, then they will vote to ban. This ensures that there is almost always someone in the channel with the power to ban someone without giving out too much power to too many people.
I don't give the .voteban to every user anymore like I used to, because some people like to ban others just for fun. I found that people that join the site, normally don't do that, and if they do, then I take away that option for them.
I'm trying to Mod USA-East right now since our mods prefer to stay on the West. I am giving alot of slack right now since most of them don't know the rules yet, and people living on the east coast are different (more mouthy) than people on the West Coast. Most of the users there don't seem to mind others talking crap, in fact they seem to enjoy it. I have banned a few people that take it to the extreme.
I would agree that some of the Mods are starting to hang out here less and less, and if they choose to leave, then I will replace them with other users that have been around for a while and earned some respect.

Yes, we may have six moderators, but the only person that has actually been moderating this month is Trash_Bag. As you said, Navy_Ceals is away, but as for rabid_gecko, lostpeon, and pandora99, I have barely seen them at all, especially peon and gecko. I've probly seen the a combined total of 10 times the whole month. It's kinda hard for trash to do it all by herself.

What about members with the .voteban command access? Not too often that there are no members in the channel. Here are the mods in the channel just today: [2:45:43 PM] <To rabid_gecko> You have arrived at the #1 Trivia Channel! Visit our Web Site at triviahost.proboards26.com/index.cgi WEB MEMBERS HAVE BOT ACCESS! (join the FREE site!) Now also on USA-East! [9:07:27 AM] <To pandora99> You have arrived at the #1 Trivia Channel! Visit our Web Site at triviahost.proboards26.com/index.cgi WEB MEMBERS HAVE BOT ACCESS! (join the FREE site!) Now also on USA-East! [11:52:26 PM] <Trash_Bag> fiji Plus, I have been on (using TriviaHost) off and on all day. So that's four mods in the channel today. Again, not to mention the members with .voteban access. I guess i'm just not seeing the lack of moderation...... If you can be more specific with times...or a member that caused a problem, I will check the logs. Chalupa

Just because they entered the channel doesn't mean they are staying to moderate. I can see that nobody understands what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter that the mods enter the channel, somebody has to be there. Next month, when Trash 'semi-retires' as she said she would, your major source of moderation will be gone.

Ilmare, I'm not trying to argue, or miss your point, i'm just trying to look at the facts here and understand if what you are saying is valid or not.
I would agree that Trash_Bag is the Mod who is in the channel more than any other Mod. But having said that, every Mod (except Navy_Ceals) has been in the channel today. Lost_Peon is in the channel right now. Navy_Ceals spends alot of time in the channel, but told us he would be taking a couple weeks off.
How many mods do you think the channel needs? Keep in mind that Mods kick people based on their opinions, moods, etc and where one Mod might ban, another might not. If we have too many mods, then we could end up with too many people banned and a channel full of Mods with no users. I am a bigger fan of the .voteban system since it lets the users in the channel decide. You have this access, so I can't imagine why there would be a problem where you can't .voteban someone??
Chalupa
Anyone else care to express an opinion here?

Hey, I would like to say, I contribute when I can, but other, more important things take precedence, e.g. school, social life, etc. We can't all be there 24 hours a day, but we make the best of things and are able to cover most of the time. I really don't think it's that big of a problem.

Its Monday, I know you won't be back til Thursday, but just an observation. It is about 4:45 pm, and we have quite a few people that constantly are making useless comments, which I consider spam. And nothing I can do about it. You said you wanted times, so I'll do my best to find them.
Edit: This goes on for quite some time, as it still hasn't stopped. I'm telling people to stop spamming, and the response I get is most commonly "stfu". Another Edit: It finally stops when most of them leave the channel, at about 5:15. I will add times as I see them
-Monday, 6:20 pm, 6:40 pm, 7:55 pm, 8:02 pm, 8:39 pm

It seems to me that the underlying issue here is the desire of our members for a reliable service that is maintained 24/7. I dont know much about bots so I will probably be of no real use here. However, Im quite certain that moderating isnt as much the issue as our not being able to refresh the bot more often to keep it stronger and harder to knock off. Some members may have other solutions along this line.
But in saying this, Chalupa have a look at the brief log just after u set the trivia bot for the last time before leaving to go out of town. Why did the bot go down that soon? Can u see a reason?

I reviewed the logs from Monday and found no one spamming. In fact, I searched for the word "Spamming" to see what you were talking about, and found a couple of times it came up. Here is one of them:
[4:55:20 PM] <BackUpTrivia> Q: Astronomy: Which is the densest and most massive molecular cloud in the Milky Way galaxy? [4:55:26 PM] <Lador-Shadowelf> nebula [4:55:26 PM] <roSsKeithINc> asteroid belt [4:55:27 PM] <RCB_buttonboy> Black hole [4:55:30 PM] <Ghanrak> gold [4:55:30 PM] <BackUpTrivia> Hint: ---i--a--u---- [4:55:34 PM] <roSsKeithINc> my farts [4:55:34 PM] <RCB_buttonboy> Dark matter [4:55:35 PM] <Lloyd_Buck> earth [4:55:37 PM] <AFA_Cheeeeeese> centuria alpha [4:55:40 PM] <BackUpTrivia> Hint: -a-it-a--u- -- [4:55:42 PM] <RCB_buttonboy> llyod [4:55:44 PM] <Ilmare> sagitaurus b [4:55:44 PM] <RCB_buttonboy> whre do u live [4:55:46 PM] <RCB_buttonboy> lol [4:55:50 PM] <BackUpTrivia> Hint: -a-it-a--us B2 [4:55:54 PM] <Ilmare> omg [4:55:58 PM] <Lador-Shadowelf> sagittarius b2 [4:55:58 PM] <BackUpTrivia> Ownage By, Lador-Shadowelf! answer: Sagittarius B2 (Score: 5 Rank: 156 Streak: 0) [4:55:58 PM] <BackUpTrivia> You have been awarded a pat on the back for scoring 5 points. Maybe the issue here is "What is spamming"? People talking in the channel are not spamming. This is what I consider spam:
jknsdajkdfsjkadfjklfdjkdf dsfkjnfdsjkfdkjdjkfdkjfdjklsdflkjsdfgkjldfs zsdfmgjsdfgjklnhzdfg,m.zdnfgl,jsdzfgdsf mjasdfgmjdsfgnm,sdfgnm,sd
Or it could be words that make sense, but for example, the same sentence spammed over and over again.
People answering the question, or talking is not spam, and I wouldn't want everyone who talks banned from the channel. This is exactly why I don't give out mod powers to too many people. Everyone has different ideas on what is ok and what is not, and if you have too many Mods, then everyone is banned for something and the channel is empty. Kind of a waste of time to even have the channel imho.
How many other people want users banned for the above?
This I would consider spam, I agree with LostPeon for kicking or banning:
[8:00:41 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> N [8:00:42 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> E [8:00:42 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> R [8:00:43 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> D [8:00:43 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> S [8:00:44 PM] <MC.Ikema> nice peon [8:00:47 PM] <Ilmare> stop spamming [8:00:50 PM] <BackUpTrivia> Q: Which Australian Capital is named after the naturalist on the Vessel 'Beagle' [8:00:54 PM] <LostPeon> darwin [8:00:54 PM] <BackUpTrivia> Ownage By, LostPeon! answer: darwin (Score: 56 Rank: 34 Streak: 1) [8:00:56 PM] <no.wins> eh [8:00:59 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> N [8:00:59 PM] <MC.Ikema> nice [8:00:59 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> E [8:01:00 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> R [8:01:00 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> D [8:01:00 PM] <azn_fo_lif3> S [8:01:04 PM] <Ilmare> STOP SPAMMING [8:01:05 PM] <LostPeon> .kick azn_fo_lif3 [8:01:05 PM] azn_fo_lif3 was kicked out of the channel by TriviaHost

Alright, if you don't see at as a problem right now, thats fine. I was just making a suggestion on my observations. It would be nice to have the bot restarted more frequently though....
Anyway, I think you've done a good job so far with the site, and the channel as well. If you ever have need of another moderator, I'll be available.

just to help you out, chalupa, here's a time of day you can check for spammers: around 1:15am, dec 11 2004. you can search for "spam". i'm not sayinig that any more people should be given mod powers. in fact i think things are quite nice now the way they are. i would hate to see the mod powers fall into the hands of the wrong people. keep up the good work!

Yeah for Pandora99! I am surprized things work as well as they do most the time. The moderators do what they can but they can't always be there to fix every little thing that goes wrong. They do a great job and since they don't get paid to do this we can at least give them our respect.
