Some say its 111, others say its 110, yet some people say it was 110 that was the number invented by tolkien. I find this rubbish because in the fellowship of the ring, bilbo was 111 when he said, "...alas, eleventy years far too short a time to live amongst..." He clearly states that its 111.

eleventy is 110, and eleventy-first is 111.
To quote Bilbo, "Today is my eleventy-first birthday!"

correction: He said, "Alas, eleventy-one years far too short to live amongst such admirable hobbits."
He said eleventy-one, in which he said he was 111 years old.
(Just think if he had never found the ring, he would have probably died near 80, so the hobbits would have never heard the speech, and consequently we would have never had this debate.)

God tech, you sound like the christians when they talk about Da Vinci Code.
Bilbo mos' def said eleventy one, referring to 111. However, I personally think that 111 would be eleventeen, as to me the "teen" implies a prefix of 1 to the number. Eleventy would be 110, as "ty" implies a suffix of 0 for the number.
Twelvety = 120 Twelveteen = 112
etc.

God tech, you sound like the christians when they talk about Da Vinci Code. Oh My! Do I have to start putting a SARCASM disclaimer on my posts? I mean geesh! I'm writing in a manner that sounds like Gollum and you take it seriously?

Phoenix - No I don't, that's why it's in the FICTION section of the library, which so many people seem to overlook... but go back on topic, I'd hate for such a wonderful comment to be buried in a locked thread.
Any rebuttals to my eleventeen, twelveteen, etc?

I could see Twelvety as being 120 and Twelvety-one as 121
But Twelveteen = 112 doesn't sound right.
Eleventy-two sounds better for 112.

I'm with rabid here... PTC... there aren't what ifs with a novel. What would make sense is "Just think if J.R.R. Tolkien never wrote the Hobbit, we would have never had this debate". However, that's a "No Shit, Sherlock" statement.

Ahem, i said what i said, and you can take it anyway you like. Now, DX:
eleventeen = 110 twelveteen = 120 thirteen??? 13, or 130? What should it be? Thirtyteen?
I like your idea, but what do you think it should be?
