Yeah, us Americans tend to not think of anyone being as, what's the best word, civilized as we are. It is one of the faults that the average American citizen has. That's why the internet is a powerful tool. It teaches the new generation about other cultures and lifestyles.

LOl yup it's kinda ironic that the american stereotype of canadians, which is so far off, actually leads to the canadian stereotype that americas are just so dumb. It's actually a real problem lol, on my icq information message when people search, i have to state in it that no i don't live in an igloo. That was interesting to learn that someone actually asked you that Rabid lol. And that's a YES I have seen the rick mercer talking to americans, and yes, that was the most hillarious/scary/sad thing I've seen, maybe ever. In the video the guy goes down to the United States and talks to all sorts of different people, not stupid teenagers, but to: profs who have taught for like 40 years at Yale, 4th year graduated students, senior citizens, politicians, he is able to include such a wide range of people. And he doesn't ask them questions that would stump someone of average intelligence, he asks questions that leave no room for argument that these people have zero idea of what's going on in the world. Such like: "did you know Canada goes by the 20 hour day?" and then the next seen you see is: "Canada we think you should switch to the 24 hour day" *a little info. for you americans, Canadians made the 24 hour day (standard flemming). Rick: "Do you think that Canada should be allowed to use US access to get to the ocean? Since Canada is landlocked" American trying to sound intelligent: "Yes for sure, I don't think it's fair to landlocked countries, we should act as a good neighbour and give you access. *Note: Canada has the world's most waterfrontage Ok that's enough, you can't explain these things that just ruins it *interestingly american reporters felt Rick mercer did a good job and decided to do the same thing to Canadians. All that needs to be said about that is they didn't get the footage they needed I also find Leno's Jay walking episodes pretty good, speak up americans, do you know people like that? Or are those people like the 1 outa 1000's? I'm NavY_Ceals, And I Am Canadian (those commercials are nice too!!!)

my answer to where do you live is always canada then followed usually by past the first moose you see its the second igloo on the right lol, honestly for being as big as we are #2 in landmass i believe not many people actually know alot about canada LOL, so here goes kee hee
THE I AM CANADIAN RANT
Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a Furtrader, and I don't live in an igloo, or eat blubber or own a dogsled. And I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada, although I'm certain they're really, really nice.
I have a prime minister... not a president, I speak English and French, not American and I pronounce it About, not A-boot.
I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack, I believe in peacekeeping, not policing, diversity not assimilation, and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.
A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch, and it IS pronounced Zed, not Zee... ZED!! Canada is the 2nd largest land mass, the 1st nation of hockey, and the best part of North America.
My name is pandora... and...I......AM......CANADIAN!
Thank you.

I kinda feel like I should stay out of this, me being American and all, but I do agree with Trash on this one. I don't know much about Canada, but since I don't, I don't act like I do either. So yeah, I am sort of out of the loop when it comes to knowing about Canada, but I do know enough not to make myself look completely stupid. At lest I hope.

LOL that is a very cool chant! (hey pandora I think I know you, you work with Bill right? ) Despite what Trash and Jonathan seem to be stating in regards to them not making these sort of predispositions, this chant is funny because its true. Not everyone in, well let's choose the United States because their so close and should know better, will have these misunderstandings of Canada; As Jonathan claims he himself does not. But Jonathan you must agree with me that what you and your fellow Americans know about Canada comes from the media right? You yourself in a different post said how much power American media has. I know there are exceptions, I even asked in my above post to tell me from your (american) views how true that is for people you know. This type of misunderstanding is really just funny.. it's also kind of sad how little information there is globally, but in no way should these things be taken as "slander" so I'm not sure where your coming from Trash. you know what i always found amazinly funny is that in school i learned a ton about the states but I dont think the american schools return that errmmmm duty responsability i dont know what to call it that is partially the reason I think that americans are quite oblivious to anything other than the good ole usa you are taught to be very patriotic sometimes I think to the exclusion of other countries i dunno let me know what you think

Yea, I have a couple cousins down in California and they don't really know much about Canada, even though they have visited me up here three times. They still seem to not know that it gets warm in the summer, depending on where you are however. But for example, they call togues beanies. And they seem to know Canada is up north, even though they don't know how far exactly. But yea, when you are the leading world power, you don't really need to know all that much about Canada or any other nations.

Double thumbs up for you. Americans aren't taught much about other countries in school. I once heard that 84% of high school 11th graders in the US couldn't point out the middle east before the first war in Iraq. That's really sad. But that's the way things are. The only opporotunities I had to learn about a different country during grade school I can think of are either in a foreign language class or european history, both of which were not manditory but a choice. And it really is a shame but I say it again, that's just the way things are.

At my school, they hand out a piece of paper with advice to foreign students. A lot of it is rather boring, but there was one piece of advice that went something like this:
Americans are ignorant. They do not know much about any culture than their own. If you tell them where you are from and they don't know where that is, do not be upset or impatient. Simply accept that they lack geographical, ethnic, and cultural knowledge.
...or something to that effect. SO TRUE.
Good ol' United States. I'm in California.
